Softball Falls Short Of Platinum Title At TOC In Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Keeley Ray laced an RBI double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to get to within one run, but that's as close as the Sonoma State softball team would get, falling 3-2 in the Platinum Bracket title game to Cal State Dominguez Hills at the 14th Annual Tournament of Champions, hosted by Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.

The No. 21 Seawolves dropped to 27-10 this season after going 4-3 in the TOC this weekend.  The Toros improved to 19-15.

Carlie Daniel had an outstanding weekend for SSU, going 9 for 16 with four doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored in six games played.  Amanda Llerena went 2-1 and had two saves with a 1.64 ERA, striking out 29 batters in 21.1 innings of work.  Both Daniel and Llerena was named to the TOC All-Tournament Team for their efforts.

Sonoma State, Daniel specifically, didn't waste any time scoring a run, smashing a solo home run to left center for the 1-0 lead.  It held up until the fourth when Cal State Dominguez Hills got a pinch-hit two-RBI single by Alexis Viramontes.  A very important insurance run came across the plate for the Toros in the fifth when Jasmine Ruiz launched the first pitch she saw up and over the left field fence for the 3-1 advantage.

It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that the Seawolves sparked a rally when Leanna Georges got aboard on a one-out error, then scored from first base on Ray's double to left center.  However, CSUDH pitcher Jamie Duran (9-6) buckled down and struckout the next two batters to end the ballgame and secure the 3-2 win for the Toros.  Mayleen Mazon (7-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out two.

Seven different Seawolves recorded a hit in the ballgame.  Another notable weekend performance for Sonoma State, Ray went 10 for 21 with six RBI and seven runs scored, extending her hitting streak to 17 games and her reached base streak to 37 games.

Sonoma State will return to CCAA action next weekend, visiting Seaside to face nationally-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday and Saturday.
