Toros Top Seawolves In Battle Of Nationally-Ranked Teams

CARSON, Calif. -- TJ Perez scored his third goal of the season in the 82nd minute, but the Sonoma State men's soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday at Toro Stadium in Carson.  The 14th-ranked Seawolves fall to 3-2-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the CCAA while the 23rd-ranked Toros rise to 6-1-0 (2-0-0 CCAA).

While Sonoma outshot Cal State Dominguez Hills 15-14 in the match, the host Toros were able to put one in early in the first half, then three more CSUDH attempts found the net in a span of 12 minutes midway through the second half to put the game out of reach.  Mike Diaz and Pedro Velasquez each scored twice for the hosts.

Down by one score, the Seawolves put the pressure on the Toros defense towards the end of the first half and into the second.  SSU held an 8-5 shot advantage in the first half, then came out firing after halftime with three attempts almost immediately, but CSUDH was able to clear everything out and hold the visitors in check the rest of the way, with the exception of allowing Perez to put the Seawolves on the board at 80:03.  In fact, Sonoma was outshooting CSUDH 9-1 from the 9:42 mark of the opening period to the 47:31 mark of the second half, but the Toros turned it around and took 9 of the last 13 shots of the match, three of which that got past SSU keeper Mitch North.

Perez took a team-high six shots in the contest, five of which came in the second half.  North made three saves before Sean Taufer came on in relief for the final 14 minutes of the day.  CSUDH keeper Chase Gentry made four saves for the hosts.

Sonoma State will head north to face Humboldt State on Wednesday before returning home next Sunday for a showdown with archrival Chico State.
