ROHNERT PARK -- Brenton Frame didn't waste any time getting the Sonoma State men's soccer team on the scoreboard in the 2015 season, burying a 22-yard free kick into the upper right corner of the net for his first of two goals on the day, followed by a breakaway goal by
TJ Perez late in the first half, propelling the Seawolves to a 3-1 season-opening win over visiting Simon Fraser on Thursday evening at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
Sonoma opens the 2015 campaign at 1-0-0, while the Clan, the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division II West Region champions, begin their season at 0-1-0.
Just 1:42 into the contest, Frame bent a rocket around a wall of defenders on a free kick after SSU was fouled just outside the box. The ball nestled into the corner of the net before Simon Fraser goalkeeper Brandon Watson knew what to do. Just before the half, Perez stole the ball away from a defender deep in Clan territory going one-on-one with Watson before Perez chipped it up and over Watson and into the net for the very important insurance goal at 42:54.
In the 59th minute, Frame struck again, this time off of a
Josh Sanchez corner kick to put the hosts up big 3-0 with just over 30 minutes left to play in regulation.
Simon Fraser didn't bow out. The visitors went on to outshoot Sonoma 9-5 in the second half (and 11-10 in the game), and one of the 11 shots found the net in the 67th minute by James Fraser to cut the Seawolf lead to two at 3-1. Then, SSU was called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Simon Fraser, but Adam Jones' attempt missed wide left when Sonoma State goalkeeper
Mitch North dove the other way, holding the score at 3-1. The Clan put the pressure on the Seawolves for the final 20 minutes, outshooting SSU 4-0 and was 2-0 in corner kicks, but North came up big with some huge saves to keep the visitors out of the net the rest of the way.
North made six stops on the day, including four in the final 45 minutes of the match. Simon Fraser's Watson made three saves.
Quotes from Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:"That was a great win! Simon Fraser is a very good team and is going to win a lot of games."
"I thought we played really well in the first half. We were able to control the game through ball possession, yet go big when we had to. There was a point in the first half where we kind of lost our composure and the game started get away from us. I had a bunch of players warmed up ready to go in, but then we settled down and got control of the game again."
"Simon Fraser was very physical and we were able to match that which is good for us because we are always known as more of a finesse team."
"I thought our defense was outstanding.
Dylan Stafford,
Ryan Rohane and
Dane Shaffar are experienced and played well.
Eric Alvarado is settling in nicely and is getting better every game and
Armando Coronel was very dangerous, they couldn't stop him."
"Brenton (Frame) had a strong game. He played like a European center forward and held the ball up well for us. His goals were outstanding."
"We will enjoy this one tonight, but it's back to work tomorrow. Fresno Pacific is a very good team and they return a lot of players. We are expecting a battle on Saturday."
Next Up:Sonoma State hosts another West Region power in Fresno Pacific on Saturday at 5:00 pm, also at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
