HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Madelyn Densberger went for a match-high 13 kills and hit .393 and
Caylie Seitz added nine kills with a .350 hitting percentage as the 12th-ranked Sonoma State women's volleyball team cruised to its first win of the 2015 season, a 3-0 sweep (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) over Saint Martin's on day two of the Hawaii Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Seawolves rise to 1-1 this season and will now drive an hour north to Laie, Hawaii to face BYU-Hawaii later this evening at 10:30 pm Pacific Time (7:30 pm Hawaii Time).
The Seawolves sizzled on offense in the opening set, hitting at a .519 clip with 15 kills and one error in 27 attacks. Densberger and Seitz both had four kills while
Rachel Andrews and
Lexi Reddick added three apiece to lift SSU to the 25-18 win.
In the second set, Densberger continued to pound the hardwood, putting five kills down, complemented by four off the hand of
Morgan Annala. The set would feature 70 percent of the matches' tie scores (7) and lead changes (3), but Sonoma began to pull away midway through the frame and hold the Saints to their lowest set point total of the afternoon, taking the win 25-17.
In the third and clinching set, the Seawolf offense cooled a bit, but the defense came up big on several occasions, including the effort by
Kaitlyn Connolly, who recorded six of her match-high 14 digs that frame and all three of SSU's team blocks in the match came in the third set as well to keep the SMU offense hitting just .132 and secure the win 25-21.
Calan Seitz handed out 18 assists and served a match-high four aces in the victory. Reddick finished with six kills and seven digs and
Courtney Seda added 16 assists from the setting position. Offensively as a team, the Seawolves hit .323 as the Saints hit just .184 overall.
