TURLOCK, Calif. -- Andy Mitchell scored a career-high 17 points as Sonoma State men's basketball team pulled off a 64-56 overtime victory against Stanislaus State at Fitzpatrick Arena in Turlock Friday night. The road win evens up the Seawolves' conference record at 4-4 and improves their overall record to 9-5. The Warriors fall to 4-5 in the CCAA and 5-9 on the season.
Although
James Slade knocked down a 3-pointer that started off the game, the Warriors' offense took control, scoring 17 points in under 10 minutes. The Seawolves scored just one more point in that amount of time.
That lead, however, was relinquished with less than two minutes to go in the half when the SSU offense went on a 20-5 run. They would extend their lead by six, leaving the score 28-22 at half time.
There were a total of six lead-changes in the second half, but the Seawolves held the lead for the last eight minutes. That was, however, until Stanislaus' Kyle Gouveia tipped the ball into the hoop after receiving the offensive rebound with two seconds to go, tying the game at 53 apiece at the end of regulation.
Those five minutes of overtime were all that SSU needed to pull away from the Warriors and seal their fourth conference win.
James Davis was responsible for seven of his team's 11 points during that span while the Stanislaus offense was only able to tack on three more points.
Due to a duel-effort by
Nathan Molony-Benjamin and
Luke Cochran, who combined for 18 rebounds on the night, the Warriors were only able to score 14 points in the paint. Molony-Benjamin possessed 11 of those rebounds while also tacking on three blocks.
Jimmy Golden came off the bench for SSU and contributed a career-best 12 points. Davis knocked in 12 points as well.
The next stop on the Seawolves' road trip will be Chico State, where SSU will be looking to upset the No. 25-ranked Wildcats yet again, after doing so back on Dec. 18. Chico is 4-1 since their last meeting against the Seawolves. Tipoff is tomorrow, Jan. 16, at 7:30 at Acker Gymnasium in Chico.
