O'Malley Powers Seawolves Over Coyotes In Series Finale

ROHNERT PARK -- Newcomer Ryan O'Malley capped an incredible weekend with a walk off solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Sonoma State baseball team to its first win of 2016, an 8-7 thriller in Sunday's series finale against visiting Cal State San Bernardino.

O'Malley went 4 for 6 with two home runs and a double in game three of the three-game series, and finished the weekend going 7 for 12 (.583) with three doubles, three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored for a slugging percentage of 1.583.  His three home runs in just the first three games of the year has come within one home run of matching the team-high of four home runs for each of the past two seasons -- Eric Ehlow (4 in 2014), Alex Crosby (4 in 2015) and Adam Manzer (4 in 2015).

Sonoma State will host Cetys Universidad (Mexico) in an exhibition doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond on Wednesday.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.  The Seawolves will then hit the road on Saturday to play a non-conference twinbill with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside.

GAME 2 (Continuation of Saturday's Halted Game):  Cal State San Bernardino 7, Sonoma State 4 -- Box Score

Before the thrilling conclusion of the season-opening series, the Coyotes and Seawolves began the day Sunday tied at 3-3 after game two of Saturday's doubleheader was suspended in the top of the sixth inning due to darkness.

Breaking the 3-3 tie was O'Malley in the bottom of the sixth inning on his first of three home runs on the day, a solo shot to right field on a 3-2 pitch.  However, CSUSB rallied for four unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the 7-4 win and a 2-0 record to start the Coyotes head coach Dave Martinez era.

Matthew Richards and O'Malley had three hits each, both with a double.  Cody Morris also hit a home run for SSU in the game.

GAME 3:  Sonoma State 8, Cal State San Bernardino 7 (11 innings) -- Box Score

The Seawolves found themselves trailing 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Spencer Neve scored O'Malley to cut the Coyote lead in half, 2-1.  CSUSB responded with two more runs in their half of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead.  Sonoma answered right back in its next at bat, beginning with a solo home run by Matthew Richards, followed by the first of two home runs in the game by O'Malley, a two-run shot to even the score at 4-4.

The tie game was short-lived, however, as Cal State San Bernardino put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth for the 7-4 advantage.  In the bottom of the seventh, Sonoma State had two runners on with two outs when O'Malley hit a routine fly ball to left field for what should have been the third out of the inning, but CSUSB left fielder David Romo slipped, hit the ground, and couldn't recover in time to make the catch, allowing the ball to drop to the turf while Grant St. Martin and Cody Morris crossed the plate to come within a run at 7-6.  The Seawolves then loaded the bases after Trevor Abrams was hit by a pitch and Trevor Mallett walked.  O'Malley came sprinting home a couple of pitches later on a wild pitch to even the contest at 7-7, but the go-ahead run was eventually left stranded on third base when the Coyotes got Philip Ramos to fly out to end the inning.

From then on, both teams were held scoreless until the 11th, but not without excitement.  CSUSB loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Taylor Leach came on and induced an inning-ending double play to end that threat.  In the SSU eighth after a two-out double by Manzer, St. Martin singled to left field, but Manzer had to hold at third after tripping over the base on his attempt for home and O'Malley flied out to left field a couple of pitches later to keep the game tied.

In the CSUSB 10th, the Coyotes had runners on the corners with one out, but Caron flew out to left field and Buchanan's attempt to tag third and take off for home was denied on a rocket from Manzer in left to Neve at home to double up CSUSB and end the inning.

Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, O'Malley ended the 3 hour, 41 minute marathon, launching a 1-2 pitch into orbit.

In addition to O'Malley's 4 for 6 effort at the plate that produced five RBI, St. Martin went 3 for 6 with two runs scored, and both Neve and Manzer had two hits each.  Cody Bennett (1-0) got the victory after throwing a scoreless top of the 11th inning.  Leach allowed just one hit over three innings in his collegiate debut, walking two and striking out three.
