ROHNERT PARK -- A late-game rally by the Sonoma State men's basketball team was not enough to get past visiting Cal State San Bernardino Friday night in a nail-biting upset by a score of 60-57.
Despite the efforts of
James Davis, who scored a game-leading 15 points, the Seawolves drop to 2-4 in the CCAA and 7-5 overall while the Coyotes captured their first conference win, improving to 1-6 in conference and 4-7 on the season.
Although the Seawolves' 45.5 shot percentage and 34 rebounds led the Coyotes, who shot 37.7 percent and snatched 27 off the rim, it was CSUSB who ultimately capitalized on Seawolf mistakes, scoring 16 points from SSU's 17 turnovers.
The largest lead of the night was nine held by CSU San Bernardino with 5:31 left to go in the game, but with less than two minutes to go, the Seawolves were able to cut the deficit to just one and found themselves with the final possession of the contest. After a timeout, Sonoma went the length of the floor with 19 seconds left on the game clock, and with 10 ticks left, Davis pulled up for a potential go-ahead three-pointer, but missed and the Coyotes hit two free throws just second later to seal their victory.
During the 40 minutes of play, there were seven ties and seven lead changes.
Andy Mitchell was responsible for seven of Sonoma State's rebounds and also tacked on nine points.
The Coyotes' Everett Turner led his team with 13 points on the night.
Sonoma State will return to The Wolves' Den Saturday Night where it will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m.
