Lopez Scores Equalizer Late As Seawolves Tie With Gators

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Down a goal late in regulation, Maury Lopez headed in a pass from Evan Roehrig to knot the game at 1-1 in the 74th minute, but neither team could score the rest of the way as the Sonoma State men's soccer team was forced to tie visiting San Francisco State, 1-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cook Sypher Field in Santa Rosa.

The Seawolves (6-2-5 overall) extend their unbeaten streak to seven games and sit in second place in the CCAA standings with 17 points (5-1-2 in conference play), just two points back of UC San Diego.  The Gators move to 6-6-2 (3-5-2 CCAA).

The Gators were the first to strike in the 18th minute. From a cross pass Ashley Watson, Rainer Plantinos would score his fourth goal of the season. The Seawolves would answer late on Lopez's team-leading fourth goal of the year at 73:47.  From then on, Sonoma outshot SFSU 5-2 in the final 14 minutes of regulation, and 7-4 in the final 34 minutes of the contest, but both teams were held out of the net to force the draw.

The Seawolves outshot the Gators 19-14, including a 12-2 margin in the second half alone.  Sonoma also had 11 shots on goal to five for SF State.  Mitch North had four saves on the day and Emmanuel Jimenez of San Francisco State had 10 saves.  The Seawolves had a trio of players have three shots on the day, while SF State's Ashley Watson led all players with five shots.

Sonoma State will host Humboldt State at home on Wednesday at 12:30 pm before playing its final regular season road game on Friday at Chico State.

Postgame Quotes from SSU Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:

"That was a tough game. SF State is well coached and they came out ready to play."

"I wasn't happy with how we started the game. We weren't pressuring the ball and we gave up too much possession and it cost us with a goal. We made a few substitutions and were able to change the game in our favor."

"We showed a lot of character to battle back and get the equalizer. We pushed for the game-winner, but couldn't make it happen."

"Maury (Lopez) was very dangerous today and his hard work paid off with a nice goal."

"We have a difficult and important stretch coming up and we need to bounce back and get back to our winning ways. We will be ready for Humboldt (State) at home on Wednesday and then at Chico (State) on Friday."
