BELMONT, Calif. – Sonoma State defeated their tournament host, Notre Dame de Namur 88-67 Friday night. This is their first official win and game on the season, having split their previous exhibition matches.
As a team, the Seawolves were over 50% from the field goal range and from beyond the arch and were 13 for 18 at the line. Their score of 88 is the most points scored against a Division II team since the 2006-07 season when Sonoma beat Stanislaus State, 89-72.
Sophomore guard
Kylie Kiech had 21 points and ten rebounds, for two career highs and a double-double on the night. She also had the team high of four assists. Junior forward
Molly Donovan had 14 points and 9 rebounds. for Sonoma and junior guard
Madison Burroughs had four steals against the Argonauts.
There were no lead changes after the first minute of the game. The Seawolves outscored their opponent 28-15 and 20-10 in the first half to secure the lead. Even though Notre Dame de Namur outscored the Seawolves 26-14 in the third quarter, Sonoma regained their bearings and won the fourth quarter 26-16.
In the first half, the Seawolves were able to capitalize off steals and rebounds scoring a total of 22 points off them. In the second half, the Seawolves totaled eleven fouls and the Argonauts were able to make up lost ground on free throws and were successful with layups.
In the fourth quarter, Sonoma went on a 12-2 run and comfortably defeated the Argonauts.
The Seawolves will play Dominican University at the tournament tomorrow at 1pm.
