HAYWARD, Calif. -- Jimmy Golden and
Luke Cochran both scored in double-figures as the Sonoma State men's basketball team dominated both ends of the floor to defeat Notre Dame de Namur 64-42 Saturday night at the Pioneer Challenge hosted by Cal State East Bay in Hayward. The Seawolves earn a split in the season-opening weekend, moving to 1-1 to begin the 2016-17 campaign. The Argonauts fell to 0-2.
After a three-pointer by Notre Dame de Namur with 15 seconds left in the first half cut the Sonoma State lead to just one point at 20-19, Cochran scored on a lay in, drew the foul and converted the and-one opportunity to push the Seawolf lead back out to four points heading into the half.
Cochran's play at the end of the first half would be the start of a 9-0 run for SSU that continued into the second stanza, thanks to three-pointers by
Armani Nicolis and
Mason Phillips for a 29-19 lead with 16:41 left in the contest.
The teams would go back and forth until Sonoma was able to pile on another 9-0 run that took the game down to the 2:36 mark with the Seawolves in control, 62-36, a 26-point margin that proved to be too much for NDNU to overcome.
Golden led all players with 11 points adding four rebounds. Cochran recorded 10 points and corralled a team-best six rebounds. Sonoma connected on 22 of 51 shots, a percentage of 43.1. From three-point range, the Seawolf sharpshooters were 9 of 16 (56.3 percent). Defensively, SSU held Notre Dame de Namur to just 34.0 percent from the floor (17-50) and just 4 of 20 (25.0 percent) from long range.
Sonoma State will return home next weekend to host the annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic Friday and Saturday at The Wolves' Den. Cal State San Bernardino will play Academy of Art to open the action Friday at 5:30 pm before the Seawolves take on Saint Martin's at 7:30 pm.
