Seawolves Close Regular Season With Loss to Broncos

POMONA, Calif. – Sonoma State ended their CCAA regular season play in a tough five set loss to Cal Poly Pomona 29-27, 25-17, 15-25, 18-25, and 12-15. Their record falls to 14-11 overall and 12-6 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Pomona is now 9-17 overall and 5-12 in the CCAA.

The Seawolves have earned a spot in the 2016 CCAA volleyball tournament. They will play Cal State LA on Thursday, November 17 at 5pm in Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino. The last time these two teams faced off was September 30 and ended in a four-set loss for the Seawolves.

Rachel Andrews had 15 kills with a hitting percentage of .583 on 26 swings and put up four blocks against the Broncos. Exiting the regular season, the senior middle blocker is in first place for hitting percentage in the CCAA with .389 and fifth in blocks per set in CCAA play only. Courtney Seda racked up 54 assists on the night and sits in fifth place in the CCAA for assists per set with 10.21.

Calan Seitz was the Seawolf leader in points (18) combining 16 kills and two service aces, she was followed closely by Andrews who had 17.5 total points. Emily Papale had 12 kills on a hitting percentage of .324, respectively. Ashleigh Phelps lead the defense with 20 digs and Seda followed with 13.

In the first set the teams were back and forth. The Seawolves were down 21-23 when a Broncos error and a Seitz kill tied the game at 23 all. The final tie was 27 all after a Broncos error. Consecutive kills by Wiesner and Andrews won the set 29-27.

In the beginning of the second set, the Seawolves grabbed a four-point lead on their opponent 8-4 thanks in part to a service ace and kill from Papale. Cal Poly Pomona fought back to get the score within 2, but the Broncos were plagued by errors and Sonoma minimized the effect of their own errors as well as ran an effective offense at the net. A final Seawolf run of 12 to 7 won the set in Sonoma's favor 25-17.

Errors plagued Sonoma in the third, and Cal Poly slowly and steadily won the set. The Seawolves made a three-point push to go from 11-19 to 14-19, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos found an offensive rhythm and won the set 25-15.

The closest the Seawolves were able to get to their opponent was within six. In the forth set the Broncos and Seawolves were tied at 5-all. It was then Cal Poly Pomona built their lead 5-11 and won the set eventually at 18-25.

Again in the fifth set Cal Poly Pomona jumped to the early lead of 3-8 and Sonoma was just unable to recover in the shorter fifth set. They fell to the Broncos 12-15.
