No. 19 Seawolves Stunned By Golden Eagles In PKs

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Despite holding an 18-5 shot advantage through 110 minutes of scoreless play, the Sonoma State women's soccer team was eliminated from the 2016 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament after Cal State L.A. won 3-2 in penalty kicks in the first of two conference semifinals Friday at Warrior Stadium in Turlock.

The game goes down as a tie for both squads; the 19th-ranked Seawolves moves to 12-2-3 overall and will now await Monday's announcement of the 2016 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament field, which is scheduled for 3:00 pm on NCAA.com.  Sonoma entered the weekend as the No. 3 team in the West Region and will need to remain in the Top 6 to qualify for a NCAA postseason berth for the fourth time in five seasons.

The Golden Eagles (7-8-4) advance to Sunday's CCAA Final against the winner of the other semifinal match between No. 1 seed UC San Diego and No. 5 seed Stanislaus State.

Sonoma saw its share of chances all evening, including one attempt that banged off the crossbar early in the second half, followed by a putback shot that was saved by Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado.  In all, the Seawolves outshot the Golden Eagles 7-1 in the first half and 9-2 in the second half before both teams attempted two shots each in the extra 20 minutes of play.

With a scoreless tie at the end of regulation and both overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks to decide which team would advance to Sunday's tournament final.  Taylor Enzler missed the first attempt, but so did CSULA's Jennifer Torres, thanks to a big save by Kristen Spear, who entered the game for the Seawolves for the penalty kick session.  Madison Minton netted the first PK of the night, but the Golden Eagles matched it to tie it at 1-1.  Sara Van Wagoner came up next, but missed, allowing CSULA to take a 2-1 lead with two kicks left for each team.  Kaila Silveira stepped up to the line, but missed her try, and so did Anahie Duran of CSULA.  With one kick left per team, Allison Hadidian, Sonoma's starting goalkeeper, knotted the session at two apiece, but Micaela Estrada sent the Golden Eagles into Sunday's final with her successful kick to make it 3-2.

In the end, Sam Layman and Kristyn Lerma led the Seawolves with four shots each.  Hadidian made one save in the 110-minute contest.
