Seawolves Bounce Back With Convincing Win Over Otters

KENTFIELD, Calif.— Three Seawolves scored in double figures, including a game-high 20 points from Jimmy Golden, in a convincing 75-57 victory Saturday night over Cal State Monterey Bay at the College of Marin in Kentfield. With the win the Seawolves jump to 6-3 on the year and 2-1 in conference play, while the Otters fall to 2-8 overall and remain winless in conference play at 0-4.

After a close loss on Friday night to conference opponent San Francisco State, Sonoma looked to end the tail end of a back-to-back on a high note against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay. After the Otters jumped out to an early 6-4 lead with 16:14 remaining in the first half, the Seawolves had ice in their veins and never relinquished the lead again. Sonoma was able to increase its lead to as many as 11 points in the first half after a Luke Cochran lay-up made it 23-12 at the 7:51 mark. Monterey kept fighting, however, and managed to cut Sonoma's lead down to single-digits, entering halftime with a score of 34-27.

For the second game in a row, the Seawolves started the second half hot going on a 7-2 run to go up by double-digits once again with a score of 41-29. The game would never be within single-digits the rest of the way, thanks to a superb shooting half by the Seawolves, who shot 59.3 percent in the second half, after only shooting 37.5 percent in the opening stanza. The Seawolves outscored the Otters 41-30 in the final frame, and at one point led by as many as 24 points stretching the score to 73-49, before ending the contest at 75-57.

Golden was able to tally 14 of his game-high 20 points during a scorching second half in which he shot 5 for 7 from the floor and 7 for 11 for the entirety of the game. Khalid Johnson also had a solid shooting night scoring 12 points on 4 of 7 shooting, eight of those points coming in the second half. Jordan Fleck provided a spark off the bench, scoring 12, five of which came from the charity stripe. Luke Cochran led the team in rebounding with six, and Stephen Dorsey was able to add five off the bench, all of which came in the first half. The Seawolves shot 47.5 percent overall in the game, going 28 for 59 from the floor, and 7 of 15 from beyond-the-arc (46.7 percent). The Seawolves also took excellent care of the basketball, only committing five turnovers in the contest.

The Otters had three players in double figures of their own, with Jahvon Johnson leading the team with 11 points. Kevin Warren, and Julian Ducree were each able to pour in 10 points, rounding out the double-digit scoring. Gregg Polosky was able to corral a game-high nine rebounds. Monterey shot 45.7 percent for the game, shooting 21 for 46 from the hardwood. The difference in the game was the Seawolves were able to hold the Otters to only 13.3 percent shooting from long range (2 for 15).

The Seawolves will return to action next Saturday night on the road against conference rival Chico State at Acker Gymnasium starting at 7:30PM.
