Gill Sinks Otters with Buzzer-Beater Saturday Night

KENTFIELD, Calif. – Carly Gill scored the buzzer-beater three-pointer to get the win against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night. Sonoma State came back from being down 59-63 with under two minutes left in regulation time to win 68-67.  The victory for the Seawolves raises their record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA. The Otters record falls to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in conference.

Helping Sonoma to victory was near perfect shooting from the free-throw line. The Seawolves as a team were 27-28, and 19-19 in the second half.  Kylie Kiech was an impressive 11-12 from the charity stripe and held the game high of 19 points.  Though Monterey Bay got off more shots than their opponent and made more baskets from the field and beyond the arch, Sonoma was able to capitalize on their free-throws.

Kiech also lead her team in rebounds with 7, Madison Burroughs had the second highest with six, and Gill followed with 5. Molly Donovan had the second highest point total with 14 and was six for nine in the field. Burroughs also chipped in ten points, four assists, and two steals.

The first points on the board were in Sonoma's favor thanks to a layup by Burroughs assisted by Jessica Mitz. The first three minutes of the game saw six fouls, and the first three points for Monterey Bay were all free-throws, until they made a three-pointer at the 6:47 mark. After that, every possession for the teams brought a made basket. The score went from 10-6 to 16-12 in less than two minutes. The end of the quarter featured a steal and fast break layup from Burroughs, a deep shot from the field by Madeline Lowe, and two made free throws from Gill. Sonoma had the lead 24-18.

The Seawolves extended their lead to 10 on a fast break when Burroughs launched an across court pass to Barnes who scored the layup. Donovan was the next to score for Sonoma before Monterey Bay went on a run. In five possessions, they closed the gap from 12 to 1 heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw little scoring from both teams. The Otters gained the lead early in the third quarter with back-to-back three-pointers. Sonoma scored only ten points in the quarter, eight of them coming from the charity stripe and CSUMB only 12. The quarter ended 48-47 in favor of Monterey Bay.

In the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter Sonoma scored 12 points, eight of them free throws, and Monterey Bay 15 to make the score 59-63. Just under the two-minute mark, Kiech was fouled on a three-pointer and went to the line to shoot three. She made all her free-throws and brought the score to 62-63. The next trip down the court, Monterey Bay was fouled on a made a layup and scored the extra basket, getting them ahead 62-65.

At 17 seconds left in the game, Kiech made a three-pointer and again closed the score within one. Sonoma fouled CSUMB with 12 seconds left, but the Otters only made one of their free-throws. Sonoma got the rebound and on their next possession passed the ball to Kiech who got triple teamed and then kicked it out to Gill who made the game winning trey from downtown at the last second.

Sonoma State will next play Chico State in Acker Gymnasium on December 17 at 5:30pm.
