Fuscaldo Wins 300th Game At Sonoma State In Defeat Of CSLA

LOS ANGELES -- Jackson Gion provided a spark off the bench, dropping in a team-high 15 points and three others also scored in double-figures as the Sonoma State men's basketball team held off a late rally by host Cal State L.A. to win 78-75 on Saturday night at the Eagles Nest in Los Angeles.

The win by the Seawolves (5-2, 1-0 CCAA) marked a milestone 300th win at Sonoma State for 23rd-year head coach Pat Fuscaldo, who now has 330 wins in 26 seasons as a head coach overall, including the three seasons he spent at Notre Dame de Namur (1991-94).

Sonoma jumped out to a large 13-point lead midway through the first half, but Cal State L.A. began to chip away and a three-pointer by the Golden Eagles with six seconds left in the half gave CSULA a one-point 38-37 lead at halftime.

A layup by Luke Cochran, followed by a three-pointer by Mason Phillips on back-to-back possessions at the 18-minute mark of the second half enabled the Seawolves to eventually hold a lead of 10 points during five separate occasions in the final stanza, the final time coming after two free throws by Gion with 1:57 remaining in the contest.  However, Cal State L.A.'s Travis Hammonds made things interesting down the stretch, draining four three-pointers in the final 1:49 to get the Golden Eagles within one point at 76-75 with 14 ticks left.

During the Seawolves' next possession, Phillips was fouled and calmly sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds on the clock to push the lead back to three points.  Cal State L.A. then went the length of the floor and found Jordan Wilson open, but his uncontested game-tying attempt at the buzzer rimmed off, securing the Seawolf win.

Gion scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half.  Phillips ended with 14 points while Cochran and Khalid Johnson chipped in with 13 points in the victory.  The Seawolves shot 53.2 percent from the floor (25-47), including 56.3 percent from beyond the arc (9-16).  Sonoma also outrebounded CSULA, 35-28.

For Cal State L.A., Hammonds accounted for 35 points on 11 of 18 from the floor (7 of 13 from long range), grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.  The hosts were held ot 41.4 percent from the floor (24-58) and just 35.3 percent from the three-point arc (12-34).

Sonoma State will host San Francisco State on Friday at 7:30 pm, but at the College of Marin in Kentfield. It will be the first of six home games that are being relocated this season due to the renovations occurring in The Wolves' Den over the next two months.  The Seawolves are expected to return to its home court on the SSU campus for their home game against Chico State on Feb. 3.
