SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Nathan Molony-Benjamin recorded three blocks to break the program record for most blocks in a career as the Sonoma State men's basketball team, which boasts the top scoring defense in all of Division II, held visiting Cal State East Bay to just 38 points, also a new program record, in Saturday's 59-38 New Year's Eve victory at Haehl Pavilion on the campus of Santa Rosa Junior College.
The Seawolves rise to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA while the Pioneers fell to 9-4 (3-3 CCAA).
Molony-Benjamin now has 75 career blocks, topping former SSU basketball player Chris Oliver's previous record of 72 that was set 14 years ago.
The 38 points allowed by the Seawolf defense is the lowest single-game total by an opponent in school history, besting the previous record of 40 set twice (Feb. 5, 1999 vs. Cal State Bakersfield and Mar. 4, 2006 vs. UC San Diego). With that, Sonoma State jumped to No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 58.7 points per game this season.
Sonoma led Cal State East Bay from start to finish on Saturday with the 21-point win being the largest lead of the contest for the hosts.
Luke Cochran matched his season-high in points leading SSU with 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting and eight rebounds. Molony-Benjamin was the only other Seawolf in double-figures with 10 points to go along with four blocks and the aforementioned three rejections.
As a team, the Seawolves shot 48.8 percent from the floor on 20 for 41 shooting, outrebounding the Pioneers 41-29. Cal State East Bay shot a dismal 24.1 percent on 13 for 54, including just 6 of 28 from three-point range.
Sonoma State will return to action on Friday at Stanislaus State in Turlock. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
