SANTA ROSA, Calif. – Sonoma State never saw a lead on Saturday night against Cal State East Bay and bowed to the Pioneers 63-46. The Seawolves are set back to 3-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall while the Pioneers up their record to 4-2 in the CCAA and 7-6 overall.
Sonoma had a tough time recovering from Cal State East Bay's accurate shooting and aggressive defense that averages nine steals a game. Sonoma was 32 percent from the field and 18 percent from behind the three-point line. Comparatively, the Pioneers shot 42 percent from the field and 47 percent from behind the three-point line and were 4-5 for treys in the first quarter alone.
The Seawolves' top scorer on the night was freshman
Madeline Lowe with eleven points,
Madison Burroughs and
Kylie Kiech had ten apiece, respectively.
Kim Savio had the game high of seven rebounds.
SSU played hard for the entire game, powering through to make tough shots in the paint against a strong Pioneer defense. Burroughs had a layup at the buzzer to end the first half and Lowe came out of the media timeout in the third quarter to convert a three point play off a fouled made layup. To end the game, the Seawolves had back-to-back three point plays, one of them a trey by Morgan Maclean.
Sonoma was down 4-10 by 4:30 in quarter one and finished 10-18. The Pioneers would keep a lead at least that size for the remainder of the game as they were ahead at the half by 12, after the third quarter by 19, and their largest lead of 21 was at 3:24 in the fourth quarter.
Next for the Seawolves is Academy of Art at 7:00 on January 3rd. Dominican University will host while the Wolves' Den undergoes construction.
