Coyotes Pull Away Late To Defeat Seawolves On Friday

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- A three-pointer by James Davis with 9:31 left in regulation capped an 8-0 run and put the Sonoma State men's basketball team down by just three points, but the Seawolves would be held without a field goal the rest of the way, allowing host Cal State San Bernardino to run away with the 83-69 victory Friday night at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino.

Sonoma State (13-12, 8-11 CCAA), which has already clinched a CCAA tournament berth, falls into a tie for seventh place in the CCAA standings with Cal State L.A. with one regular season game left.  A win at UC San Diego Saturday night would set up a rematch between the No. 7 seed Seawolves and  the No. 2 seed Tritons on Tuesday night in La Jolla in the first round of the CCAA tournament, but a loss to UCSD and a Cal State L.A. win over CCAA regular season champion Chico State also on Saturday, Sonoma would be the No. 8 seed and travel to Chico on Tuesday to face the top-seeded Wildcats.

Though already eliminated from postseason contention, Cal State San Bernardino improves to 9-14 (6-13 CCAA).

Sonoma led for four of the first eight minutes of the game, enjoying its last lead of 13-11 at the 13:12 mark of the first half, but a 6-0 run by CSUSB put the hosts up by four and they would never relinquish the lead the rest of the way, even getting up to a 14-point lead near the end of the first half.

The Seawolves got within three points after the 3-ball from Davis at the 9:31 mark of half number two, but from then on, Sonoma went cold, missing its final 12 shots of the contest (0 for 3 from long range), but managed an 8 for 10 effort from the free throw line while the Coyotes scored 19 points to secure the 83-69 win.

Davis led the way with 18 points while Andy Mitchell and Nathan Molony-Benjamin chipped in with 11 apiece.

Sonoma State wraps up the regular season Saturday night against No. 19 UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena in La Jolla.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
