Comeback Falls Short In 4-3 Road Loss to Academy of Art

OAKLAND, Calif. - After going on a great run in conference play the past two weekends, the Sonoma State Seawolves ran into some trouble on Tuesday against the Academy of Art in non-conference play, where a late comeback attempt came up just a bit short in a 4-3 loss at Laney College.

Down 4-1 going into the ninth inning, Sonoma State (8-11) got a boost right from the get go when Ryan O'Malley hit a leadoff homer to right to cut the deficit to 4-2. It was the senior star's team-best fifth home run of the season.

With only one out left to work with, the Seawolves put together a two out rally after a Trevor Mallett single and a Jackson Leslie double to put the tying run in scoring position. After a wild pitch scored Mallett and moved Leslie to third, Sonoma State had the tying run only 90 feet away.

Spencer Neve then drew a walk to represent the go-ahead run on the base paths, but Brett Sesma struck out to end the game and the comeback hopes of the Seawolves.

Academy of Art (7-10) has won both contests against Sonoma State this season, having previously won a game at Seawolf Diamond on February 16, 4-2.

The Seawolves had six hits in all by six different players, with Philip Ramos scoring the team's other run in the second. Jared English drew two walks and Adam Manzer added a double.

With it being an non-conference affair, nine pitchers saw the bump for Sonoma State. The Urban Knights took the lead for good in the fifth with two runs against Joey Manzi (0-2) before scoring one against Christian Viramontes in the seventh that proved to be the game-winner.

UP NEXT: Sonoma State is scheduled to host Cal State Monterey Bay in a four game series this upcoming weekend with the opener scheduled for 2 p.m. at Seawolf Diamond this Friday.
