Seawolves Cut Down By #3 Lumberjacks Twice On Monday

ARCATA, Calif. -- Alison Strycula went 4 for 7 with a double, but the Sonoma State softball team suffered losses of 9-2 and 8-0 in six innings on Monday against third-ranked Humboldt State in Arcata.

The Seawolves dropped to 26-14 overall and into fourth place in the CCAA with a 16-11 mark.  The Lumberjacks have won 12 straight, rising to 37-3-1 overall and have already clinched a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament in two weeks with a 25-2 record in conference play.

Sonoma managed 10 hits off of Humboldt pitcher Katie Obbema in game one of Monday's doubleheader, but only two runs came across the plate, one on an RBI single to score Alee Balanon in the third inning and one on a solo home run by Jordann White in the sixth.  On the other side, the Lumberjacks, who lead the CCAA in several offensive categories, smashed a season-high five home runs in the 9-2 series-opening win, three off of Amanda Llerena (16-8) and two off of Gabby Dupree, all by different HSU players.

Strycula, Daniel and White had two hits each in the game one loss.

In game two, Humboldt State scored a run in the first three innings before a grand slam off the bat of Julie Pena in the bottom of the fourth put the game out of reach from Sonoma State.  Another Lumberjack run came home in the bottom of the sixth to induce the eight-run mercy rule.

Humboldt's Madison Williams, who leads the CCAA with a 1.29 ERA, improved to a conference-best 18-1 this season in the circle, allowing just three hits to SSU in the nightcap, two of which came off of Strycula's bat, White had the other.

Sonoma State will wrap up the four-game series against Humboldt State with a doubleheader Tuesday scheduled at 11:00 am.
