TURLOCK, Calif. -- Carlie Daniel went 6 for 8 with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader, and
Brielle Vidmar tossed a two-hit shutout, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning of game two, as the Sonoma State softball team pounded host Stanislaus State, 9-3 and 10-0, in CCAA action on Friday at Warrior Softball Field in Turlock.
The Seawolves, who debuted at No. 8 in the first official NCAA Division II West Region rankings this week, improved to 26-18 overall and jumped back into fourth place in the CCAA standings with an 18-13 mark in conference play. The Warriors fell to 23-24 (15-19 CCAA).
After arriving late in Turlock, Sonoma didn't take long to warm-up to play as they pounded out 26 hits in the twinbill sweep over Stanislaus State on a windy Friday evening.
A five-run third inning of game one set the tone for SSU the rest of the night in snapping a four-game losing streak. In those four games, at Humboldt State, the Seawolves scored just four runs.
In the third inning of Friday's doubleheader, they scored five to take a 5-2 lead and never really let up the rest of the night.
By the end of the long night — after the series started 50 minutes late as the Seawolves were stuck in traffic — Sonoma State scored 19 runs on 26 hits. In the nightcap, Vidmar flirted with a no-hitter before allowing back to back hits with one out in the seventh. Still, she got the final two outs to record the shutout.
Cassidy Duke broke-up the no-no with a solid single to left and Alex Rowell sent a shot high and deep to center, but fell five foot short of a homer for a long single with one out.
In the first game, Stan State got on the board with runs in the first and second, but SSU scored five times in the third on five hits — four of them doubles — and the hit-parade was on. In all, the Seawolves had nine extra base hits, including seven doubles, a triple and a home run.
Sonoma State and Stanislaus State will wrap up the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
