SAN FRANCISCO -- The Sonoma State softball team grabbed a 3-1 victory in game one before San Francisco State retaliated with a 3-1 victory in game two as the two teams split Monday's doubleheader in San Francisco. The Seawolves remain in fourth place in the CCAA standings at 20-15 (28-20 overall). The Gators fell to 24-25 (18-18 CCAA).
In game one, SF State got a tremendous pitching performance from starter Jenny Obbema (5-8) who held the Seawolves scoreless through five innings, scattering four hits during that time. The Seawolves did not reach second base until the fifth inning against Obbema.
Sonoma State countered with
Amanda Llerena (18-9) in the opener who was sharp. After a leadoff double to Jennifer Lewis in the bottom of the first inning, she scattered two more hits and an earned run over seven innings for the win.
In the top of the sixth inning the Seawolves'
Jena Kaser started the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence that finally broke the scoreless tie between the two teams. Obbema surrendered two more hits that inning and a walk and was unable to get out of the frame. Defensive miscues allowed two more unearned runs to score.
Obbema, pitching her final game at home, threw 5.0 plus solid innings, scattering seven hits, three runs, one earned with a walk. Megan Clark took the ball for the Gators in the sixth and pitched two perfect innings, with a pair of strike outs.
Angelica Terrel got the Gators on the board in the bottom of the seven inning taking Llerena deep on a 0-1 offering with two down. The home run was Terrel's third of the season.
In the nightcap Megan Clark (12-10) took the ball for the Gators again and was brilliant. The junior threw 3.2 perfect innings before giving up a two-out solo home run to
Carlie Daniel, breaking a scoreless tie.
Clark allowed just two more base runners the rest of the way, throwing 7.0 complete, scattering two hits, one earned run, with a walk and two strike outs.
The Seawolves countered with
Brielle Vidmar who threw 4.1 solid innings, holding the Gators to just four hits with a walk and three strike outs. She ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning and was pulled in favor of game one starter Llerena.
In the fifth, with two outs and runners on second and third Gabby Reta hit a sharp single down the right field line that scored Lewis and Alexis Mattos to give the Gators a 2-1 lead. SF State struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mallory Cleveland hit an opposite field home run off Llerena to give Clark an insurance run. The home run by Cleveland was her third of the year.
Sonoma State will wrap up the regular season with four games against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Saturday at the Seawolf Softball Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 1:00 pm, weather permitting.
