STOCKTON, Calif. -- Carlie Daniel ripped a two-run double in the fifth inning and
Sarah Langley hit a solo home run in the sixth, but the Sonoma State softball team couldn't overcome an early five-run deficit in a 5-3 loss to 14th-ranked Chico State in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament Friday evening at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton.
The Seawolves (32-21-1) will now play in an elimination game against No. 3 Humboldt State on Saturday at 2:30 pm; the Lumberjacks were upset by UC San Diego 6-4 earlier in the day.
Sonoma State starting pitcher
Brielle Vidmar (9-6) recorded outs on the first two batters she faced to open the game, but after a walk to Chico State's Brynn Lesovsky, Desiree Gonzalez took Vidmar deep for the early 2-0 lead over the Seawolves.
The Wildcats (37-12) piled on two more runs, both unearned, in the second inning to take a four-run advantage. It was extended to five on the fourth inning on an RBI single by Alli Cook.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Wildcats starter Brooke Langeloh would allow a hit to a SSU batter, and in that inning, she gave up two, the second being the two-RBI double by Daniel. With the double, Daniel has now tied the program's single-season doubles record of 18.
In the sixth, Langley went deep to lead off the frame, and it chased Langeloh from the game. Haley Gilham came on in relief and shut down the Seawolf offense the rest of the way, only yielding a hit to
Emma Ryan in the sixth.
Amanda Llerena eventually took over for Vidmar at the start of the sixth, and Llerena only gave up a walk in her two innings of work, shutting down the Chico offense as well.
Sonoma State entered the weekend at No. 8 in the official NCAA Division II West Region rankings and will need to hold on to that eighth and final spot for one more week to extend its streak of NCAA tournament appearances to eight.
