San Francisco, Calif. - Needing a win and some help from Cal State East Bay to nab the final spot in the CCAA North Division playoffs, the Sonoma State Seawolves got behind early and couldn't come back, ending their season and their playoff hopes with a 5-2 road loss against the San Francisco State Gators.
Having won the previous three games in the series, including a doubleheader sweep on Saturday's Senior Day, the Seawolves were needing a win and a Pioneer loss to put the final playoff spot in the hands of the CCAA tiebreakers, but Cal State East Bay defeated Cal State Monterey Bay to clinch the final playoff spot.
The Gators got ahead early against
Wade Berryhill, scoring twice in the second and three times in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead. During the top of the fourth, Sonoma State got back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches from
Matthew Richards and
Tyler Glenn to make it 5-2, but Peter Reyes settled down to keep the Seawolves off the board.
Sonoma State's best opportunity came in the sixth, when they got runners at second and third with two outs and Glenn at the plate representing the tying run, but Glenn struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
The Seawolves managed only three hits, with
Daniel Caresio notching a single to end his season going 10 for his last 17. He had hits in 12 of the last 14 games to raise his batting average from .280 to .350, taking over the team lead in that category.
Richards,
Ryan O'Malley and
Grant St. Martin each had seven home runs to tie for the team lead, while O'Malley's 14 doubles, 32 RBIs and 35 runs were all team bests. His two triples tied with catcher/first baseman
Cody Morris for the team lead.
The team finished 21-27 overall and 19-18 in the CCAA, finishing fourth in the North Division behind division winner Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, and Cal State East Bay.
