ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — In a 110-minute match, Sonoma State and Chico State ended their Sunday afternoon duel just as it started: with a 0-0 score.
The Seawolves, who have struggled as of late, were tasked with stopping a Wildcat team, who had entered the day a perfect 5-0-0 in CCAA play, and prevented them from scoring throughout the game.
That was a great game. It was like a heavyweight prizefight with neither team wanting to go down." said Head Coach Marcus Ziemer after the match. "I was really proud of how we played. Our field is really tough so we had to play a little more direct than usual, but we generated some good chances."
To say the two teams were evenly-matched in the first half, would be an understatement. Both the Seawolves and the Wildcats let off an seven shots in the first 45 minutes and committed five fouls a piece, but in the second half SSU was the more composed team.
Sonoma State limited their opponent to a few shots after the break, and nearly slotted home a game-winner near the end of regulation but Sebastian Santos' chip under pressure was waived off, as the assistant referee called Angel Acevedo's pass to Santos offside.
"Josh Sanchez was a beast in midfield," Ziemer continued. "He played the entire game and never stopped battling. He and Marcus Salvador helped us dominate the midfield. Our defense was solid. With Mitch North in goal and Evan Roehrig, Luke La Vanway, Eric Alvarado and Jonny Blake in front of him, we were solid. We were able to bring Tanner Allison and Salvador Gomez late in the game and they didn't miss a beat."
The game went into double overtime but neither team budged, as the match ended in a scoreless draw.
Mitch North was absolutely lights-out in goal, recording seven saves en route to his third shutout of the season.
With the draw in the books, the Seawolves will travel to the San Gabriel Valley later this week to take on Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona on Friday (12:30pm PT) and Sunday (2pm PT), respectively.
