ARCATA, Calif. — The Seawolves suffered a frustrating 2-2, double-overtime draw with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday morning, after an early two-goal lead was erased in the final 48 minutes of the game.
"We just didn't put in a complete performance today," said head coach Emiria Salzmann-Dunn after the game. "That's the way it is in our conference - if you take your foot off the gas for one second any CCAA team will capitalize."
Sonoma State opened the match with a third-minute goal which developed off a set piece. Madison Watts sent a free-kick from just outside the box in toward the near post where Sam Layman was waiting to pocket it right inside the net.
The lead doubled in the 25th minute when Riley West took a shot from the right side of the field, sending the ball into the box. The cross caught up a Toro defender who deflected the ball past her own keeper and netted an own goal.
The 2-0 lead held through the 42nd minute, but in the 43rd Dominguez Hills' Dana Dibble received a short through ball and connected for a Toro goal that snuck under a diving Kristen Spear.
The teams came back from the break with the score 2-1 in favor of SSU, but in the 71st minute Dominguez Hills netted the equalizer. On a ball sent from distance, Louise Kallin was able to redirect a cross with her head and scored her team's second goal of the match.
Neither team was able to break through for a game-winner before the end of regulation, and despite an additional two overtime periods, neither team edged the other as the match ended in a draw.
Salzmann-Dunn believes that the game will prove a learning opportunity for her squad as they look forward to their final game of the regular-season next week.
"The important thing is to learn from the moment and be ready for Saturday. Hopefully the tie will inspire us to continue to improve ourselves and to be a more complete team."
With the draw, the Seawolves' record now stands at 12-2-1 and 6-2-1 in conference play.
