SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — With CCAA playoff contention on the line, the Sonoma State Seawolves put in an aggressive 90-minute effort against San Francisco State University but were unable to come away with a result as they fell 1-0 in regulation.
After a scoreless first half, which featured three shots by each side, both teams came out firing in the second. Sebastian Santos laid off a shot in the 47th minute through traffic that just knocked off the crossbar, but a minute later the Gators were able to find the back of the net.
Nigus Solomon found Aydan Bowers in the box during the 48th minute, and with a quick touch Bowers beat Mitch North putting SF State up 1-0.
The Gators appeared poised to net their second of the game when minutes later a shot curved to the opposite post of North. Eric Alvarado, who had stepped in on the box, absorbed the shot with his back and saved what would have been a sure goal.
The Seawolves fought through the remainder of the second half, taking nine shots in search of an equalizer, but were stymied by the Gators and eliminated from CCAA playoff contention in their final game of the regular season.
Quotes from Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:
"That was a tough loss. San Francisco State is a very good team but I thought we played really well and up until the final whistle I thought we were going to get the equalizer. I'm really proud of how we played today.
"We will miss the senior class. Mitch North, Andrew Ogilvy, TJ Perez, Josh Sanchez, Eric Alvarado and Marcus Salvador have been a lot of fun to coach and have been very successful. It was really sad that our season is over, but I really enjoyed coaching these guys.
"We paid the price for losing some games early that we shouldn't have. We dug ourselves a hole and had two huge wins last weekend against Cal State LA and Dominguez Hills to keep our hopes alive but ultimately we came up a little short."
