SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Sonoma State volleyball team is back in the win column after defeating Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night, 3-1. The Seawolves improve to 8-1 in CCAA play and 14-4 overall after winning by the scores of 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18 over the Otters who drop to 3-4 in CCAA play and 9-6 overall.
After a heartbreaking loss on Friday night, Sonoma State found a way to dig deep and find a way to win after another long three hour drive. In the first set sophomore outside hitter
Caiti Wiesner went perfect in giving the team six kills with zero errors on 12 attempts. The first set was a literal point for point all the way to 15-15. Cal State Monterey Bay took a brief four point lead but once again the score was tied at 21-21. battle all the way to the end. Once again the teams traded points and they were deadlocked at 23-23. CSUMB called their final time out but sophomore
Lexi Mudd came up big serving the next two points and a kill by Junior middle hitter
Morgan Annala accompanied by a hitter error by the Otters gave the Seawolves a one set advantage.
The second set did not start strong for Sonoma State and they quickly found themselves down 7-2. Off the bench came Sophomore outside hitter
Tate Battistini who exploded with seven kills with zero errors on 11 attempts. Battistini was just the spark the Seawolves needed in their third road match of the week and she helped the team tie the set at 8-8. The rest of the set once again became a point for point battle with no team having a greater than two point advantage. With the score tied at 21 a piece the Seawolves ran it to set point by a big block from freshman right side
Amy Trephan and Annala. With the door almost shut the Otters made one last push getting the set to within one but Wiesner was having none of that scoring on a big swing from the outside.
In the third set it was again another point for point battle. In the entire set not one team had a bigger than two point lead. In the set both teams combined for 37 kills with CSU Monterey Bay accumulating twenty. The Otters' Amber Tygart broke out having nine kills with zero errors on 11 attempts for an out of this world hitting percentage of .818. This alone was enough to help the home team with the third set in bonus time by the score of 26-24.
Finally the Seawolves applied pressure early and the Otters broke. Sonoma State jumped out to a 17-10 lead and even though the Otters made it respectable at the end Sonoma State still won by seven. In the final set it was once again Wiesner who tallied six kills and finishing with 20 on the night.
