Seawolves Fall To Penguins In Final Seconds Of Nailbiter

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — In a game that went down to the final four seconds of play, the Seawolves found themselves bested by Dominican University as the Penguins defeated Sonoma State 72-71, Saturday night from the Wolves' Den.

With 8:31 remaining, Dominican opened up their largest margin of the game as Reverend Maduakor sunk a jumper to open up a seven-point lead. However, over the next 7:42, Sonoma State rallied back with a 16-10 run to take only their second lead of the second half. Four points from Naaman Hightower, Seth Cobb and a late pair of buckets by Jackson Gion, lead Sonoma State back to a 71-70 advantage with 1:24 to play in the game. Maduakor flipped the lead back with a layup to make it 72-71 Penguins, leaving the Seawolves with 27 seconds to win the game.

Holding the ball with six seconds remaining, Gion drove through traffic, faking toward the basket before attempting to sneak a pass to Hightower on his left. The ball ricocheted off a jumping Christian Futch and out of bounds, leaving the Seawolves with four seconds to inbound and get a shot off. Brandon Tillis found Gion to his left, who let off a mid-range jumper, but the shot fell just short of the basket as time expired.

Sonoma State found their best momentum of the game midway through the first half as a Tillis three-pointer began a 14-7 run for the Seawolves, which eventually put the hosts out to a six-point lead over Dominican with 3:59 remaining in the first half. However, the Penguins went on to score 11 points in the final minutes of the period, playing to a 33-33 tie at halftime.

Second chance points proved to be the Seawolves' undoing, as the Penguins converted their 10 offensive rebounds for 20 points on the night, compared to Sonoma State's four points on nine offensive rebounds.

With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 2-2 on the season before traveling to University of San Francisco for the North Bay Fire Relief Exhibition Game on Tuesday. Tipoff is slated for 7pm PT.
