ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — In a game in which they never trailed, the San Francisco State Gators defeated the Sonoma State 64-55, in front of a crowd of 251 at the Wolves' Den.
With the loss, the Seawolves move to 3-5 and 1-3 in CCAA play, while the Gators improve to 6-3 and 3-1 in conference.
San Francisco State started the game 7-0, pushing the Seawolves into an early deficit. Jackson Gion and Jordan Hickman responded with a pair of buckets but the Gators took off on a 14-5 run over the next 5:12, opening up a 23-8 lead. With 6:26 remaining in the first half, the Seawolves finally found their stride and began to work their way back into the game.
Down by 13, Lewayne Grant found the net to make it 28-17, before four of his teammates followed suit. Sonoma State entered halftime down 30-25, before Issac Davidson scored one from the line and Gion, one from three-point range, to start the second half and pull within one.
With the score 30-29, it appeared as if the Seawolves might mount a second-half comeback, but to the home team's dismay, SF State's Evan Zeller would go on to sink three from beyond the arc in the next 2:38, opening up the Gators' lead to 39-31.
Jordan Fleck led his team in the second half, scoring 12 and keeping the Gators within reach but the home team proved unable to narrow the deficit to any less than five through the remainder of the contest.
Sonoma State will return to action Saturday as they take on 6-2 (3-2 CCAA) Stanislaus State from the Wolves' Den. Tipoff is slated for 7:30pm PT.
