SEASIDE, Calif. -- Lindsey Calcany-Blair continued to tear apart opposing pitching Saturday, going 4 for 6 with a double, a home run and three RBI, but the Sonoma State softball team suffered a pair of losses to host Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on opening day in the CCAA. The Seawolves fell to 4-3 overall and open conference play at 0-2. The Otters improved to 6-1 (2-0 CCAA).
In game one,
Sarah Langley slashed an RBI single to right field in the top of the sixth inning, allowing
Jenny Collazo, who singled to start off the inning, to score from third base for the Seawolves first run of the game. At that point, Sonoma cut its deficit to three runs, making it a 4-1 ballgame in favor of Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Seawolf defense didn't make things easy on starting pitcher
Brigid Ruiz as they were credited with five errors in the game, all of which occurred in the first three innings. Those five errors allowed all four of the Otters' runs to score which is all CSUMB needed for the victory. Ruiz (1-1) was tagged with the loss despite not giving up an earned run. In six innings in the circle, she gave up five hits and two walks, allowing the four unearned runs while striking out three.
Calcany-Blair was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and five others pounded out one hit each off of CSUMB freshman Hayley Fein, who earned her second-career win in the circle.
In the nightcap, the Otters pounced early and often, posting 11 runs in the first three innings to run away with the 11-3 victory in five innings. CSUMB managed four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of
Brielle Vidmar (1-1), then added seven more in the third, four of which came off of Vidmar.
Offensively, Calcany-Blair smashed her second-career home run in the fourth inning, a two-run shot that also brought
Madison Barto home, cutting the Otter lead to nine runs at 11-2. Calcany-Blair then came up in the fifth with the bases loaded and recorded another RBI on a fielder's choice, but two straight put outs at third base would end the Seawolves' threat to extend the game, instead the eight-run mercy rule came into effect with the home team leading by eight or more runs after five innings. Langley went 2 for 3 in game two and Barto was 1 for 1 with two walks.
Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay wrap up its four-game series with a doubleheader Sunday in Seaside. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
