HAYWARD, Calif. --
Jordann White had quite the day offensively for the Sonoma State softball team in Saturday's doubleheader split against Cal State East Bay. White went a combined 5 for 8 with a double and a home run in a 7-2 game one win, but the Seawolves lost 5-0 in game two to close the series from Pioneer Field in Hayward. After the split, SSU stands at 32-14 and 22-10 in the CCAA, while CSUEB goes to 26-20 overall and 18-16 in the CCAA.
Â
The Seawolves came out swinging the bats and connecting early in game one on Saturday afternoon, striking for two runs in the second inning.
Alex Flores put Sonoma on the board first when she reached on a fielder's choice to second base, scoring
Alyssa Cuffia. The second run in the inning came on a bases loaded walk to
Karly Macadangdang, scoring
Jenn Amaral.
Â
Cal State East Bay would get one of those runs back off of
Brigid Ruiz in the following inning, before the Seawolves would break the game wide open. In the top of the third inning Sonoma scored four runs, two of those coming on a Flores single down the right field line. The other two runs in the inning came off the bat of Ruiz, who decided to help out her own cause with a two RBI single to increase the lead to 6-1.
Â
The Pioneers would tack on another run in the bottom of the third, before White put the icing on the cake with her solo home run in the fourth inning. That would be the final run scored in the game as SSU would go onto win by a score of 7-2. Ruiz went the distance in the pitching circle, only giving up two runs on six hits, and improving to 10-4 on the year.
Â
Sonoma pounded out 13 hits in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, with Flores leading the way with three of those. She was one of four Seawolf hitters with multiple hits in the game.
Â
Game two looked like it was off to yet another promising start after game one's offensive explosion. Macadangdang led the game off with a walk,
Jenny Collazo followed with a walk, and White followed that up with a single to load the bases. However, Abby Greer buckled down for the Pioneers, getting the next three hitters out to leave the inning unscathed. That missed opportunity in the first inning would prove costly for the Seawolves, as they would only accumulate two more hits the remainder of the game.
Â
Brielle Vidmar got the start for Sonoma and had trouble with her command early on. She pitched three innings, giving up three runs on three hits, and four walks, before being pulled in favor of
Teresa Danenberg. Danenberg wound up pitching two innings in relief and gave up one run on three hits. Freshman pitcher
Mykala Tokunaga closed out the game for the Seawolves giving up one unearned run; it was her first time seeing action since March 30th. Of the four hits Sonoma gathered, White had three of them in game two's 5-0 loss to close the series with a split.
Â
The Seawolves will be back on the diamond for their final home series of the regular season against Humboldt State. The four game series at Seawolf Softball Field will begin with a doubleheader on Friday April 21st starting at 1:00 PM, and will come to a close with a doubleheader on Saturday April 22nd starting at 11:00 AM.
