Softball Splits On Day Two At Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. -- After enduring late inning struggles in both games, the Sonoma State Softball team opened day two of the Tournament of Champions, presented by the City of Turlock, with a 5-4 victory over Simon Fraser University, before falling to Hawaii Pacific University 8-5 at Pedretti Sports Complex on Saturday night. After Saturday's split, the Seawolves sit at 27-9 on the season and have won 18 of their last 20 games.

Sonoma got off to a hot start offensively in game one on Saturday, plating one run after Alex Flores reached on an error by the short stop, scoring Alyssa Cuffia in the process. The Seawolves were able to expand their lead in the next inning thanks to a three run home run by Lindsey Calcanyblair. Sonoma would plate their fifth run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jordann White.

That fifth run would prove to be the difference as Simon Fraser would also score one run in the fourth inning and would tack on three more in the fifth to bring the Clan within one. However, the Seawolves were ultimately able to hold onto the lead and walked away with a 5-4 victory. Brigid Ruiz got the start and improved to 8-3 on the year after giving up only one run in 5.1 innings of work, striking out seven in the process.

Game two on Saturday got off to a hot start on the offensive end for both teams. Brielle Vidmar got the start for the Seawolves and immediately got into trouble, giving up two runs on four hits in the opening frame. However, Sonoma would come storming back and put up five runs in the second inning, in large part due to a bases clearing triple by Karly Macadangdang. Hawaii would get one of those runs back in the third inning before the scoring settled down in the fourth and fifth innings.

The wheels started falling off for Sonoma in the sixth inning as a two out error would prove costly. After the costly error the Sharks would respond by hitting a two run triple and then a two run home run to extend their lead to 7-5 in the late going. The Sharks would tack on one more run in the seventh and the Seawolves were unable to respond, ending day two of the Tournament of Champions with a split.

Sonoma enters day three of the Tournament of Champions with a record of 3-1 overall. They will now play twice on Sunday, opening up against Central Washington at 11:30 AM on Field 3 at Pedretti Sports Complex. The Seawolves will be back on the field at 3:00 PM against Western Oregon, this time at Field 2.
