ARCATA, Calif. - A penalty kick goal proved to be the difference in Sonoma State's 3-2 loss to Humboldt State on Sunday, as the Seawolves dropped just their third game of the season.
The Jacks jumped out to an early lead as Ethan Waters netted a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the match. The first was poked over Seawolves keeper Mitch North in the fourth minute, before Waters headed home a second in the fifth minute of the match.
The Seawolves came back in the second half to tie things up by the 53rd minute of the game. Angel Acevedo sunk a free-kick from deep a few minutes after half before Evan Roehrig crossed a ball to Sebastian Santos, who scored his fourth of the year inside the box.
Despite the Seawolves putting up twice as many shots on goal as the Jacks, Humboldt collected the game-winner in the 54th minute on a penalty kick. Mumbi Kwesele booted the ball into the right corner putting his team up for good.
The loss, which pushes Sonoma State to 5-3-1 and 2-1-0 in conference play, marks the Seawolves' first at Humboldt State since 1996. SSU will now return home to host Stanislaus State in a conference matchup at Seawolf Soccer Field on September 29 at 3pm PT.
Quotes from Head Coach Marcus Ziemer:
"That was a tough loss. Credit to them for being ready and finishing their chances early in the game, but we need to be ready to play right when the whistle blows.
"I was proud of how we battled back to equalize but then it was unfortunate that we were a little aggressive on the box and gave up the penalty kick for them to go up 3-2. We dominated the last 60 minutes and ended up outshooting them 20-8 and had 9 corners to their none. The statistics were on our side except for the most important one. Goals.
"Coach Fred Jungemann has done a great job with [the Jacks]. They are well organized and have a lot of belief in themselves. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the conference.
"We have a four-and-a-half-hour bus ride to think about this loss and then we need to bounce back and get ready for Stanislaus and Chico on the weekend."
