Seda Lifts Seawolves To Sixth Consecutive Victory Saturday

ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State volleyball team runs its record to 12-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the CCAA as the Seawolves defeat the visitors from Stanislaus State. Sonoma won by the scores of 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 while sending the Warriors to their 14th straight loss to open their season.

In the prior night's game versus Chico State the Seawolves constantly found themselves down early.  In game one against the Warriors, the Seawolves flipped the tables and showed why they are at the top of the conference slate.  Sophomore Tate Battistini came off of the bench and was extremely effective by scoring four points in a row late in the set off of senior setter Courtney Seda.  From the end line it was senior middle Kelsey McIntire who found her groove by scoring with two aces of her own, and finished with three on the evening.

In set number two the game was way more competitive, and was a battle of three-, four-, and sometimes five-point runs.   Early on it was Stanislaus State with the early five-point run, as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead.   With the score 19-18 in favor of the visitors, a 12-5 run by the home team put the Warriors down 0-2 in the match.   The run was punctuated when sophomore defensive specialist Ashleigh Phelps, who subbed in and ended up serving an ace, put the home team at game point, and then once again it was Battistini who finished the set off with another kill.

In the third set and after the ten minute break the Seawolves once again were able to jump out early in the match.  In the final moments of the set it was another run of points where Sonoma State scored nine of the last fourteen points and sent the visitors home for the evening.  Senior outside Calan Seitz was very instrumental in the set as she contributed six kills of her own, and ended up leading the  team on the evening with thirteen kills.

OTHER NOTABLE STATS:

Junior middle hitter Morgan Annala was huge on the night as she was near perfect until late in the final set when she made her first hitting error.   Annala finished the game with eight kills on 17 attempts, and a .417 hitting percentage.

Just as important was Battistini's match of the year where she contributed ten kills on the night and showed how deep this team really is, and how bright the future is for this program.

Seda averaged over 11 assists per set and was second on the team with 15 digs acquiring another double-double on the season.

Sophomore libero Megan Bohorquez led the team with 18 digs on the evening.

WHAT'S UP THIS WEEK:

The Seawolves don't have much time to breathe and enjoy their successes, as they start a four-match road run.   First the Seawolves will have a rematch game against rival Chico State on Tuesday night up in Chico.  The match will be their second time playing the Wildcats in four days, and will have huge implications on the North Division standings.

After their Tuesday match, another away match is on the horizon as Sonoma State will take on Cal State East Bay for the first time this season.  Cal State East Bay is having one of their better seasons, and are currently 9-4 on the season and run a 3-2 record for conference.  Cal State East Bay is coming off of a big win versus at Cal State Monterey Bay where they won in a five-set thriller.

Finally on Saturday October 7th the Seawolves are off to Cal State Monterey Bay where last year they dropped a heartbreaker in five sets.
