Seawolves Earn Double-Overtime Draw Against Lancers

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Double overtime would not be enough to decide a winner in Sonoma State's Thursday-afternoon game against the Cal Baptist Lancers, as the Seawolves earned a 1-1 draw in the non-conference match.

"I was happy with how we played," said Seawolves' head coach Marcus Ziemer after the game. "Both teams went at it and either team could have won, but I thought it was a fair result."

Cal Baptist struck first in the 14th minute when Hugo Gutierrez gathered 25 yards out and took a strike through traffic. The shot was redirected on the six by Aidan Apodaca who beat SSU goalkeeper Mitch North and buried it top shelf.

That would be the only goal North would allow.

"Mitch North had a great game," said Ziemer "He was ready to play and he smothered several of their chances."

Sonoma State had their first chance of the half when Gabriel Silva was awarded a yellow card 20 yards out. Luis Mendoza took the indirect free kick but the shot was saved by a diving Edgar Benitez.

The Seawolves best chance of the first half came a minute prior to the break, when TJ Perez sent a cross through the box to Angel Acevedo. Acevedo blasted a shot but it was subsequently saved by Rehmani.

The score remained 1-0 into halftime, before the Seawolves came back in the second half to equalize.

Six minutes after the break, Marcus Salvador chipped a long ball up and over the Lancers last line of defense. Waiting for him at the other end was Sebastian Santos who one-timed the bounce, volleying the ball over the outstretched gloves of the keeper, Remaini.

The score remained knotted at one through the end of regulation, eventually sending the match into double overtime. However, neither team was able to break through with a golden goal, as the game ended with a draw in 110 minutes.

"They are a very good team and although I wanted to win, I was ultimately satisfied with the tie," noted Ziemer. "Tomorrow we will recover and then get ready for Point Loma on Saturday."
