Sonoma Downs Two-Time Defending CCAA Champs In Thriller

ROHNERT PARK -- Led by double-digit scoring efforts by Ugochi Anudokem and Madison Burroughs, the Sonoma State women's basketball team led from nearly start to finish, stunning Cal State East Bay 56-55 on Saturday night at The Wolves' Den.  The Seawolves earn the weekend sweep, rising to 8-9 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA.  The two-time defending CCAA champion Pioneers fell to 12-8 (8-6 CCAA).

It was a fierce battle throughout the entire contest as neither team ever led by more than eight points at any time.  The statistical lines were nearly identical, as well, with the exception of rebounds (SSU led 39-26.  Cal State East Bay held the edge in shooting percentage, albeit a 40.8 (20-49) to 39.7 percent (23-58) output, but the Pioneers' downfall came at the free throw line where CSUEB scored just 11 of their 19 shots from the stripe, a 57.9 percent efficiency, while Sonoma State was 71.4 percent, though they went to the line just seven times (5 for 7).

The Seawolves trailed just twice in the ballgame for a total of 1 minute, 33 seconds, and the last time they found themselves behind was at the 4:32 mark of the first quarter with the score 6-5.  Jessica Mitz swished a three-pointer on SSU's next time down the floor on offense to take a two-point lead, then CSUEB countered with a made jumper to knot the score at 8-8.  It was at the 3:07 mark of the opening stanza that Sonoma took the lead for good thanks to a three-pointer by Carly Gill

East Bay could only come within one point on five separate occasions, three of which came in the final three minutes of the contest, creating quite a nailbiter for coaches, players and fans alike.  The hosts would never relinquish the lead, however, despite CSUEB having the final possession of the night with 4.5 seconds remaining.  The Pioneers took the ball down the floor and Elayshia Woolridge was able to get a 10-foot jump shot in the air just before time expired, but the shot sailed wide left and the Seawolves rushed the court in celebration.

Anudokem finished with 12 points before fouling out with more than three minutes left in the game.  Burroughs added 11 points with five assists and four rebounds.  Kim Savio contributed eight points and eight rebounds while Mitz and Sam Erisman added seven points.

The win by Sonoma State snapped a five-game losing streak to Cal State East Bay.

The Seawolves will head to southern California next weekend to take on Cal State San Marcos on Thursday before wrapping up the trip at UC San Diego on Saturday.
