LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Despite a valiant, late comeback attempt Saturday night, the Seawolves fell to UC San Diego on the 67-64.
After opening the game with a three-pointer, the Tritons continued to hold the lead and never trailed through the first half. Kenny Fraser hit a jumper with 5:57 remaining in the period, giving UC San Diego a 10-point lead, which proved to be their largest of the night.
Jackson Gion, netted 14 in the first half, allowing him to keep his squad within six at the break. By halftime the score had settled back to 30-24 before the Seawolves made things interesting in the second half.
Brandon Tillis (11 points) and
Isaac Davidson (8 points) each helped Sonoma State to a 40 point half, in which the team shot 14-29 from the field and 90.9% from the line. That effort, allowed the Seawolves to pull within a single point with seconds remaining in the game, but despite their best efforts, UC San Diego held on to a narrow 67-64 win.
With the loss, the Seawolves move to 9-10 and 7-8 in conference play before they return home to host a rematch with the Tritons, Friday at 7:30pm.
