ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Sonoma State held tight throughout much of Saturday night's showdown with conference-leading Cal Poly Pomona, but ultimately fell to the Broncos by a final of 58-48.
Jordan Hickman put the Seawolves on the board after drawing a foul and sinking the first two shots of the game from the line. After a layup from William Christmas, Isaac Davidson swished a ball from beyond the arc to take a momentary 5-2 lead. The three points proved to be the most Sonoma State would lead their opponents by all night.
Following the opening action, the Broncos took off on a 12-0 run over the next 4:43, opening up a 14-5 lead over their host. Naaman Hightower kept his team within striking distance, putting up 11 before the end of the half.
The Seawolves and Broncos returned from the break with the score 26-19 in favor of Cal Poly Pomona. Armani Nicolis and Davidson netted back-to-back threes, and pulled the Seawolves within one. Later, with the score 31-27 and Sonoma State trailing by four, the home team found six straight points, tying the game at 31, before briefly moving ahead of their opponent 34-33.
The Seawolves momentarily found another single-point lead with 13:06 remaining, thanks to a jumper by Lewayne Grant, but were shut down the rest of the way by the Broncos, who led by as many as 11 before winning the game 58-48.
With the loss, Sonoma State falls to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in conference play. The Seawolves will return to action Friday, January 12 at Cal State L.A. where they will face the Golden Eagles at 7:30pm.
