Seawolves, San Marcos Split Four-Game Series

SAN MARCOS, Calif. --  Following a win and a loss on Friday with the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos, Sonoma State once again split the day, wrapping up a four-game set on the road in Southern California. The Seawolves took game one, in a battle of bats, by a final of 8-7 before falling in the final game of the series 4-3.

Game 1
San Marcos opened up the Sunday doubleheader by putting four runs on the board in the first two innings, and held onto their lead until the top of the fifth. An RBI single by Zach Guardino in the fourth cut the Seawolves' deficit to three before Sonoma State broke out for a big fifth inning.

Josh Lenney led off the frame with a single before Joshua Medina smashed a two-run homer to left center, driving in the third baseman and pulling his team within one. Rayson Romero continued the inning with a base hit through the left side before moving to second on the next play. Alex Emerick hit a one-out single up the middle plating Romero and tying the game up at four. Emerick, who advanced to second on the throw home, promptly stole second and came in to score on a groundout by Joshua Montelongo, taking a 5-4 Seawolf lead.

However, the Cougars would not go down easy. They tied the game again, this time at five, in the bottom of the inning, before taking a two-run 7-5 lead in the sixth. The Seawolves were held scoreless during the sixth and seventh innings but in the eighth they broke through once again, scoring three and taking a 8-7 lead.

Emerick led off the inning with a single, before Jake Sahagian came up to pinch hit. Sahagian then hit one out to right up and over the fence, scoring two with a single swing. With the score tied 7-7, the Seawolves put together a two-out rally of back-to-back-to-back base hits, eventually scoring Matthew Richards on Medina's RBI single through the left side.

Grant St. Martin entered the game in the ninth, retired the side and struck out two of the four batters he faced en route to his third save of the season.

Game 2
The Seawolves and Cougars each recorded two scoring plays in game two but San Marcos got the better of their visitor as Tyler Place's three-run homer in the third lifted CSUSM to a 4-3 win in the final game of the series.

This game, the Seawolves started the scoring in the third as Sahagian hit an RBI double to left, plating Mitch West. However the Cougars countered with a four-run bottom of the third.

With runners at the corners and only one out, Marcus Wilhite singled through the left side, scoring Adam Tanoue. A double steal put both runners in scoring position but the 90 feet conceded would not matter as Place would homer to right center, driving in three and taking a 4-1 lead over Sonoma State.

The game remained scoreless for the next four innings before the Seawolves fought their way back into the game. In the top of the eighth, Joshua Montelongo came to the plate for Nicco Toni with two on and two out. Montelongo smacked a two-out double into right, scoring Guardino and West, but that would be as close as the Seawolves would come as they fell 4-3 in the game.

With the series split, Sonoma State moves to 11-11 on the year and sit two games under .500 in conference play at 7-9. They return to Seawolf Diamond this Friday as they kick off a four-game set with Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm.
