POMONA, Calif. – In a high-scoring affair, the Sonoma State Seawolves took the last game of their four-game set with Cal Poly Pomona by a final of 9-7 to split the series.
Cal Poly Pomona took the first lead of the game, putting a three-spot on the board in the first with an RBI double and a subsequent single that scored two. However the Seawolves struck back one inning later.
After the first two batters were retired in the top of the second, Sonoma State came together for an extended two-out rally.
Nicco Toni and
Nathan Mann each singled before pulling off a double steal prior to
Bryce Nagata's walk. With the bases loaded,
Rayson Romero pulled a 3-2 pitch through the left side, clearing the bases with a double.
Anthony Clyma then followed up with a double through the right side, scoring Romero before he himself was brought home on a single by
Joshua Montelongo.
The Seawolves added two more runs to their five-run total in the fourth in another bases-loaded situation.
Jake Sahagian hit a sac fly out to right, bringing home Romero. A walk loaded the bases yet again before
Matthew Richards took a 3-2 pitch to the body, driving in Clyma.
The Broncos and Sonoma State exchanged runs in the fifth before Cal Poly Pomona put their fifth run on the board via a fielding error at second. The hosts pulled within a run when Bryce Etchandy drove in two on a double to center.
The Seawolves pushed across their final run with Nagata's second hit of the game. With a base hit up the middle, Richards rounded third and crossed the plate to make the game 9-7.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 16-14 and 12-12 in conference play. They return to action this Friday when they host Cal State San Bernardino at Seawolf Diamond.
