Seawolves Wrap Series Win In Monday Split With Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. – Following a Sunday sweep of their double header against Stanislaus State, the Sonoma State Seawolves wrapped up the series win against the Warriors on Monday with a split of the day's two games. Sonoma State won the first of two close matchups, 2-1, before falling in the seven-inning night cap by a score of 3-2.

Game 1

After opening their four-game set with a pair of back-and-forth games on Sunday, the Seawolves found themselves on winning end of a 2-1 pitchers' duel to open up Monday's double dip with the Warriors.

Jackson Berumen, who had pitched to mixed effect through his first three appearances proved effective in his fourth start of the season, going six innings while only allowing one run and striking out six along the way.

Through five innings, both teams exchanged zeros on the scoreboard before Sonoma State found an opening in the sixth.

With one out, Bryce Nagata took a 3-2 pitch out of the zone before moving into scoring position on a stolen base. The next batter, Anthony Clyma promptly rocketed a triple to right-center, plating Nagata and moving within 90 feet of the game's second run. Zach Guardino did not disappoint as he knocked an RBI single to right-center, scoring Clyma and pushing the Seawolf lead to 2-0.

The Warriors fought back in the bottom of the inning however, and pushed across a run of their own. Vicenzo Margiotta shot a lead-off single up the middle and stole second before a base hit by Braeden Oki sent him on to third. With runners at the corners and nobody out, Berumen jumped ahead on Jack Large, 0-2, and got the Stanislaus State first baseman to ground out to second. However, with the ball batted on the right side of the infield, Margiotta came in to score on the play.

After six complete from Berumen, the Seawolves turned the game over to their bullpen which proved lights out. Conor Ridley and Grant St. Martin combined for three shutout innings, only allowing three base runners and striking out four over the final frames.

Game 2

The Warriors jumped out on the front foot in the fourth game of the series, as Jack Large set the tone with a homer belted to right in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Seawolves battled back like they had all weekend, in the second looking for the four-game sweep.

A single by Joshua Montelongo and a walk from Daniel Hawkins put two on with nobody out, before Nathan Mann laid down a sac bunt in front of the mound, pushing both runners into scoring position. On an 1-0 pitch, Matthew Richards cranked a 2 RBI double to center, plating both of the runners and taking a 2-1 lead.

The lead would prove short-lived as Stanislaus scored another run in the bottom of the third. A single, stolen base and a groundout placed the Warriors' Oki at third with two outs. Ethan Utler singled toward third two pitches later, driving in Oki with a two-out base hit.

The Warriors retook the lead with an RBI double in the fourth off the bat of Margiotta and would hold the 3-2 line through the final three innings.

With the weekend series in the books, Sonoma State moves to 8-6 and 4-4 in conference play before returning home to take on UC San Diego, starting Friday at Seawolf Diamond. First pitch is slated for 2pm.
