LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Seawolves continued their series against the Eagles of Cal State Los Angeles by splitting their double header today, winning the first game 8-7 and dropping the second game 8-5.
Game 1
Cal State Los Angeles started the high scoring affair in the second inning when they scored three runs on starting pitcher
Michael Warning, only one of which was earned. Down early in the game, the Seawolves found themselves working out of a three run deficit. In the fourth, the Seawolves got on the scoreboard with a
Daniel Hawkins groundout that scored
Jake Sahagian. In the fifth innings
Grant St. Martin hit his first home run of the year to right field narrowing the Eagles lead to one.
By the sixth the Seawolves offense woke up itself. The visiting team scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead over the Eagles. LA would attempt to answer the Seawolves sixth inning by scoring two of their own runs in the bottom of the seventh, bringing Sonoma's lead within one run. In the top of the ninth, SSU would add two insurance runs which provided to be vital to their game one victory. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the home team, looking for a comeback, was able to pull the score within one. However Coach Goelz brought in St. Martin to close the game and locked down his fifth save on the year.
Starting pitcher
Michael Warning only went 3.2 innings and was replaced by
Tyson Canfield who went 4.1 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) and received the win, improving to 3-2. On the other side, James Mendez who started the game for the Eagles went five innings giving up two runs in a no decision. Gabe Ramos received the loss going two innings and giving up four runs, he moves to 0-1 on the year.
Game 2
The Seawolves looked to build off their game one success in the night cap. They quickly jumped to a 1-0 lead when
Matthew Richards singled to right, scoring Joushua Montelongo. However the home team would respond in the bottom of the inning with a run themselves.
Sonoma State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth following a double from
Grant St. Martin, scoring Montelongo, and a
Matthew Richards ground out scoring St. Martin. However the Eagles would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth when they put up four runs in the inning giving them a 5-4 lead. In the sixth the home team would add more runs with a Jorge Garcia single that scored two and a Nic Bereaud single that scored Garcia. The Seawolves had one last attempt to respond and managed to score one run of a
Zach Guardino double, however that wasn't enough for the Seawolves and they fell in the second game 8-5.
Jackson Berumen received the loss and moves to 4-3. He went 4.1 innings giving up four runs.
Joshua Lenney replaced the starter and went 1.2 innings and gave up four runs. Joey Decegile got the win for the Eagles improving to 6-2, he went 5 innings and gave up four runs (three earned). Sea Watkins came in for one batter and got him to fly out for his third save on the year.
