Berumen Solid, Seawolves Drop Doubleheader To Otters

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – In Saturday afternoon's double dip with Cal State Monterey Bay, Sonoma State found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-0 and 3-2 result, falling to 22-19 on the season and 18-17 in conference play.

Game 1
Sonoma State's offense stayed dormant through the first game as Monterey Bay's Gabe Katich pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks along the way.

The Otters jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third thanks to a three-run jack to off the bat of Hayden Duer. A pair of one-out singles put runners at the corners before Duer stepped in and crushed the first pitch he saw from Michael Warning, planting it over the left field wall.

The Seawolves had an opportunity to bounce back in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with just one out. Unfortunately, Joshua Montelongo and Joshua Lenney were both set down on swinging strikes to leave them loaded.

A sac fly in the fifth grew Monterey Bay's lead to four before adding another three runs in the eighth. Kyle Guerra laid down a sac bunt but instead of just advancing to third, Jacob Tonascia came all the way home on a throwing error. A bases-loaded throwing error by Rayson Romero allowed Connor Caspersen to come in and score before TJ Dove lifted a sac fly to center for the Otters' seventh run of the game.

Game 2
The second of the day's two games proved to be a much closer affair, as Sonoma State and Monterey Bay battled back and forth in a pitching duel through six innings.

Mitch West got his squad on the board early, lifting a long fly ball over the fence in left to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. However, the Otters bounced back in the next half-inning, tying the game up at one.

A pair of back-to-back doubles from D'Andre Sanchez and TJ Dove saw the two players switch places as Sanchez came in to score on the extra-base hit down the right field line. After that inning, Seawolf starter Jackson Berumen locked in and allowed just one hit over the next three innings.

A Matthew Richards hit-by-pitch kicked off the bottom of the sixth before Joshua Medina connected for an 0-2 base hit through the right side, advancing Richards to second. Nicco Toni then smacked a single of his own through the left side. Richards was waved home as he rounded third but was unable to beat the throw home by left fielder, Kyle Guerra. A pitching change ensued and head coach John Goelz called on Anthony Clyma to pinch hit with two outs and a pair of runners in scoring position. Clyma came through with an RBI single on the right side, scoring Medina and giving the Seawolves a 2-1 lead. Another single by Alex Emerick loaded the bases once again, but Rayson Romero stranded three with a fly out to left.

With just three outs to go and a 1-0 lead, the Seawolves looked to Berumen to finish what he had started. However, a leadoff single for the Otters pushed Sonoma State to make a call to the bullpen. Grant St. Martin took over on the mound, and collected the inning's first out on a sac bunt before walking Devin Orr. A fly out put the Seawolves one out away from victory but a hit-by-pitch, followed by two straight four-pitch walks pushed two runs in for the Otters, giving them a 3-2 lead.

The Seawolves managed to put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the frame but proved unable to force across a tying run, falling 3-2 in seven innings.

Sonoma State will return to Seawolf Diamond tomorrow looking to salvage the finale of the four-game series. First pitch is slated for 11:00 am.
