CARSON, Calif.— A game full of intensity and emotion came down to the final minute of double overtime play at the StubHub Center Friday night, as Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros sunk a 110th minute game-winner to beat the Sonoma State Seawolves 3-2.
"That was a brutal loss," said head coach
Marcus Ziemer after the game."We played so well and generated enough chances to win the game but were a bit unlucky even though we played most of the game a man down."
Scoring started early in the game as Seawolf striker,
Sebastian Santos put the visiting team on the board in the eighth minute of play. Marcos Barragan started the play, dribbling up the left side of the field before finding Santos with a through ball. Santos then went 1-v-1 with keeper Justin Fairchild before burying the ball in the lower right corner.
With the score set at 1-0 things started to get physical. A foul by Dominguez Hills' Aweyso Aweyeso resulted in a yellow card and less than a minute later, Sonoma State defender
Anthony Gonzalez-Cruz was shown a straight red on a hard tackle.
"I understand the red card but it could have easily been a yellow. There was no malicious intent," said Ziemer. "Teto was just a little bit late."
Down a man with just under 70 minutes to play, the Seawolves reorganized doing their best to maintain the 1-0 lead.
However, in the 37th minute, a misplayed clearance was collected by the Toros who were able to take advantage of the miscue and mount a counter-attack. Musa Ali received the ball on the right side and placed it in the lower right corner of the goal.
The teams headed to the break with the score knotted at one, but after halftime Sonoma State came out charging and worked their way back on top via Santos.
A turnover by the Toros to
Salvador Gomez-Avila in the 55th minute proved costly as the Sonoma State defender sent a towering ball forty yards where Santos picked it up on the right wing. The Seawolf striker found himself facing a defender and a charging Fairchild, but with the keeper charging off his line, Santos flicked the ball up and over the goalie, chipping the ball into the back of the net for a short-handed goal.
Scoring his sixth goal in seven games, Santos has impressed this season with his intensity and accurate placement. Ziemer said of his forward, "
Sebastian Santos has been incredible with his work rate and has been so good in front of goal."
The Toros then equalized in the 68th minute on a goal by Ramiro Palencia, 2-2, which would hold through the end of regulation. Dominguez Hills almost took the lead in the 79th minute but with a brilliant denial, keeper
Arturo Ornelas kept the Seawolves on level ground.
Down a man and facing overtime, the Seawolves struggled to get shots off in the final 20 minutes of play as the Toros ramped up their offensive push. Unfortunately, with Sonoma State on the cusp of a hard-fought draw through double overtime, Dominguez Hills was able to ping a ball off the post and into the back of the net with 51 seconds remaining to win the game.
"We have a good team and we are playing very well but just need to get on track. We are going to turn this around. We will keep our heads up and rebound on Sunday."
With the loss, the Seawolves fall to 2-3-2 and 0-2-1 in CCAA play, before heading to Cal State LA on Sunday to take on the Golden Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m..
