AZUSA, Calif. – Coming off a pair of non-conference draws last week, the Sonoma State offense awoke for four goals Thursday night, besting Azusa Pacific 4-1 in Southern California.
Scoreless through the first 37 minutes of play, the hosts broke through when Kellie Yoshihara found Kaylee Nicoll with a breakaway chip pass. Nicoll controlled and converted with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived however, as SSU equalized less than a minute later. In a scramble around the goal,
Molly Murphy was able to hit her target, tying the game at 1-1.
The Seawolves were able to take the lead in the second half two minutes after the break and never looked back.
On a cross from
Riley West,
Kaitlyn Emigh put the ball on frame with a header to the low left corner putting Sonoma State up 2-1. The score remained the same until the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick in the 68th minute which
Sam Layman converted to increase her squad's margin to two.
Alyssa Silva drew the curtains with a shot to the right side of the goal coming off a pass from
Miranda Sanchez.
With the win, the Seawolves improve to 1-0-2 on the season. Sonoma State takes a day off before traveling to Irvine to take on Concordia at the Eagles Nest. Kickoff is slated for 11 AM.
