Rohnert Park, Ca - The hopes for a storybook ending to what has been a challenging season for SSU Women's soccer ended abruptly in the NCAA Division II First round on Friday.
A foul call just outside the box near the end line gave Cal State LA a set piece in the 87th minute. Off the free kick by Petaluma native Nicolette Elliott the ball deflected to the left wing where Danya Gutierrez gathered it in and fired a shot into the net for the game's only goal.
Despite outshooting the Golden Eagles 25-9 Sonoma State could not get one past Cal State LA keeper Amanda Leal who made 13 saves on the day.
It is a tough way to end an otherwise brilliant season of soccer for SSU. The CCAA regular season Champions at 10-0-1, a number 2 seed in the West Region and a great win over UC San Diego at home all made it a fun and exciting season.
Cal State La moves on to round 2 where they meet Western Washington in a re-match of an early season win for the Golden Eagles. The Vikings defeated Stanislaus State 1-0 earlier in the day.
The Seawolves fought hard all the way to the end.
Julia Pritchard with 10 shots on the day and
Madison Watts with 3.
Ashley Morton had 6 saves but the final shot was too high and just out of reach for the SSU keeper. Credit Cal State LA defensively as they held leading scorer
Alexis Espitia to just 2 shots all game long.
Sunday's round 2 action will begin at 1PM here at Seawolf Soccer Stadium.
