Season Opener Split

Santa Rosa, Calif. – Sonoma State split its opening day in non-conference doubleheader against Fresno Pacific. Dropping game one 7-5 in a hard-fought 11-innings and taking game two 1-0 in the closing game.
 
GAME 1: Fresno Pacific 7, Sonoma State 5
In game one, the Seawolves matched the Sunbirds third inning two-run frame, taking when Donovyn Curiel took advantage of a passed ball, and Zach Guardino scored off Kory Browns double to center field for a 2-2 tie. After 2.3 scoreless innings, Sonoma State gained its first lead of the game 3-2 when Dan Deely scored off Curiel's single through the left side. The Sunbirds answered back in the seventh tieing the game up once again. Both teams went silent till the ninth inning, with the bases juiced the Sunbirds drew a walk, followed by a single down the left field line to gain a 5-3 lead over the Seawolves. In the bottom the ninth, Harwell stepped up to the plate with a two-run homer to force extra innings. After a scoreless 10th inning the Sunbirds capped the game with a two-run 11th inning for the win.
 
GAME 2: Sonoma State 1, Fresno Pacific 0
Robert Towne got the win in game two, after facing 17 batters (five strikeout's) in five innings on the mound. Tyson Canfield collected the save after finishing the final two innings and facing seven Sunbirds. In the fifth in the Seawolves had bases loaded when John Abate drew a walk.
