Rich Shayewitz at the helm, Sonoma State has appeared in the CCAA post season tournament three years in a row. Facing the No. 8 seed UC San Diego the last two seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18). This season the Seawolves faced No. 7 seed Cal Poly Pomona on its home court in Kellogg Arena.
Sonoma State ends its 2018-19 campaign 11-15 overall and 9-13 in the CCAA.
Despite a season-high 19-point performance from
Kylie Kiech and outscoring Cal Poly Pomona 40-28 in the second half the Seawolves season came to an end in round one of the CCAA tournament 66-59.
The Seawolves stayed within one point of the Broncos for most of the first quarter. Cal Poly Pomona pulled away in the second half gaining a 19-point lead at halftime.
Sonoma State committed 12 lead changes (two in the first half and 10 in the second half) and capitalizing on 23 bench points.
Sonoma State held the Broncos to 43.2 percent (16-for-37) from the field (40 percent 4-for-10 from the arc) and 100 percent from the charity stripe (2-for-2).
Taylor Johnson took her first free through of the season helping the Seawolves shoot 100 percent from the line (3-for-3).
Kiech came out the of halftime making a pair of basketballs for the Seawolves. Sonoma State held the Broncos silent in the final three minutes of the third quarter while scoring eight points (six free throws).
Back-to-back three-pointers by Johnson got the Seawolves within ten points of the Broncos for the first time since the opening quarter.
Sonoma States offense improved in the second half as they shot 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from the field (35.7 percent from the three-point line) and 90 percent (9-for-10) from the charity line. While holding Cal Poly Pomona to 24 percent (6-for-25) from the field, 0 percent from the arc, missing five shots and 80 percent (16-for-20) from the line in the first half for a 66-59 final score.
