Rohnert Park, CA - The Seawolves headed into their Thursday night matchup sitting in the 7 spot just inside the top 8 for the CCAA tournament but are looking for a potential first round home game with a couple wins and some needed help from other teams to end the finish out the regular season. Sonoma came off a tough road trip dropping a single game last weekend to Chico State losing closely by 6 down the stretch but were eager and excited to be home for their final weekend of CCAA play.
Sonoma jumped out to an early lead with some defensive stops and easy buckets. The Seawolves were only 7-20 from the field in the first quarter but held the Golden Eagles to just 4 made field goals keeping them under 10 points. The Seawolves led by as much as 8 at the half with
Serena Santos leading the team with 9 points. SSU hit 3 three balls to extend the lead in the second quarter but La surged back and scored 18 in the quarter to bring the game to within 3 at the break.
Another big quarter for the Eagles to start the second half put them up 2 heading into the 4th. The Eagles were 7-21 from the field but the Seawolves hit a cold spell and were just 5-14 from the field only making one three ball in the period. The Seawolves struggled down the stretch offensively and never shot over 40% from the field the entire game.
With 6:00 minutes to play the Seawolves let the game get out of hand as the lead stretched to 11 for the Eagles. However, Sonoma would climb back in the game with back-to-back buckets as they would go on to score 10 straight points down inside 2:00 minutes! The Seawolves were once again headed down to the wire and were looking to come out on top this time.
Ugochi Anudokem had another strong second half finishing with 14 points and 16 boards on the night. With her last bucket of the game she would also score her 1,000th point for Sonoma State on her terrific career!
Zane Sheckherd also came off the bench and shot 3-3 from downtown making a big impact for the Seawolves.
As the game came to a close turnovers were costly for the Seawolves as they once again finished with double digit turnovers on the night. Down by just 1 and under a minute to play, Sonoma had a chance to win the game but with a missed lay up and no foul called LA was fouled and went to the line where they made 2-2 to stretch the lead to 3. An early shot though left plenty of time on the clock for another crack at a 3 ball to tie it. However, an errant pass out of bounds would turn the ball over again and allow the Eagles to run out the clock.
The Seawolves remained in the 7 spot after some other upsets around the conference and will return to the Wolves Den Saturday afternoon for senior night looking to end their 3-game skid and head into the tournament with plenty of confidence. The women will play at 1 PM and you can watch the game live on the CCAA Network.
